hosting a bone marrow drive
How to do a Bone Marrow DNA drive at your church.
Hosting a Bone Marrow DNA drive at your church is simple and it saves lives. Here is a step-by-step plan on how to organize a drive for your church.
- Go to the National Bone Marrow Registry website at marrow.org (link below)
- Choose your state
- Pick a center closest to your church location
- Contact the center and let them know you want to host a drive
- Work with center rep to determine a date for a drive
- Communicate to your congregation at least 6 weeks before the blood drive via bulletins, website, announcement and fliers (see links at end of steps to download resources)
- You will need to take sign-ups for the blood drive ahead of time to give the centers some idea for staffing (many times your own volunteers can be trained to staff - making the drive all the more comfortable for your congregation!)
- Have an in-house contact that works directly with the center and is the contact the day of the drive. They can keep things running smooth!
- Make sure church has a room or a couple of rooms that they can dedicate the day of the drive
- It is highly suggested that you host the drive on a Sunday during your service times if you have multiple services.

Remember, that even if you cannot donate marrow for age or health reasons, you can still donate - it costs over $100 per applicant to register to the national database.
